Supporting a Local Economy

We believe strongly in supporting a vital, integrated local economy.  This not only reduces energy use by drastically shortening the distance goods travel, it also builds community connections and strengthens sense of place, as well as keeping dollars in the hands of small entreprenuers and fighting the dangerous opacity of distant corporate industry.  To this end, we work hard to support local agriculture, industry, and community whenever possible.

Local Farming

We are committed to sourcing our beer ingredients as close to home as possible.  This insures that we get the freshest ingredients from farmers we know we can depend on for quality and ethics, and minimizes the environmental effects of transporting goods over long distances.  And when there isn’t a local farmer growing the crops we need, we work to change that.  We are currently brewing a special release organic beer entirely with American organic hops, a practice unheard-of in an era when practically all organic hops come from New Zealand.

Local Materials

In addition to ingredients, we also get most of our other inputs locally.  The biodiesel for our boiler comes from Vermont-processed soybeans grown in Quebec, and our glass and our case boxes come from next door in New York.

Community Support

We recognize the value of community, and donate time and money to a wide variety of local organizations, as well as participating in numerous festivals and fundraising events.
